Review:
From "English Dance & Song" (Magazine of the English Folk Dance
and Song
Society), Spring 2003
Brian Peters is well-known as one of the best English singers and musicians
on the club and festival scene and he has produced a number of excellent CDs
which reflect the quality of his performances (if you haven't heard them, shame
on you! Try starting with the most recent, "Lines"). As well as these
performances in which he sprinkles a liberal number of tune sets amongst the
songs, he has for some years been an member of the excellent Band of the Rising
Sun dance band and so has great practical experience as to what makes a tune
a good dance tune. As well as having a particularly good nose for a traditional
tune, his experience in the medium has led to him writing a number of tunes
which beautifully complement the older material and which are amongst the finest
newly-fashioned English dance tunes. However, having been in sessions where
Brian has played, I am only too aware of the problem - you hear this terrific
tune that he's written and think, "I'll have a bit of that!" only
to discover that the odd quirks which make the tunes stand out, tend to leave
you behind when attempting to master the beast after only a couple of repetitions.
Consequently, I am delighted that he has now produced this book, which will
allow me and others to be able to tackle some great tunes in the privacy of
our own homes! The book is evenly split between his own compositions and traditional
material which he has used - all are absolutely top notch, encompassing a great
range of types, styles and moods, and ranging from straightforward but effective
tunes, to more challenging material. The book is beautifully typeset and printed,
benefits from some words of wisdom in the introduction which should be compulsory
reading for session melodeon players, and is further enhanced by a small selection
of attractive photographs.
This is a high-class venture with cracking tunes -buy it!
